Smart lighting & home automation
Lighting and controls that suit your routines, existing equipment and home network.

Smart lighting & home automation in Eastern Sydney & Bayside
Smart lighting can start with a room you use every day: a dimmed lounge, a scheduled entry light or several lights controlled together. Apexelec helps scope the electrical installation and controls around the outcome you want. We can discuss a small lighting upgrade or coordinated controls during a renovation, with equipment compatibility assessed before selection.
From our work

What we can help with
- Smart lighting and dimming enquiries
- Switch and control upgrades for suitable fittings
- Lighting scenes and scheduling options
- Planning selected app or remote-control arrangements
- Electrical and network coordination for a chosen system
Start with a useful routine
Describe what you want to happen and which lights are involved. A single control for the living area, an entry-light schedule or adjustable lighting for different activities gives the project a clearer goal than a list of devices. We can assess the electrical work and controls needed to support that goal.
Choose a system that fits the equipment
Share details of existing smart devices, light fittings, switches and network equipment. Compatibility, control preferences and any reliance on internet or cloud services should be discussed before purchasing. Also tell us how you want to operate the lights manually and who will manage accounts or settings after installation.
What to send with your enquiry
- The rooms and lights you want to control
- Examples of the routines or scenes you want
- Existing fitting, dimmer and smart-device details
- Router location and known network issues
- Preferred wall, app or remote controls
Questions about smart lighting & home automation
Can smart lighting be added to an existing home?
Often, but the chosen controls must suit the wiring, fittings and network. Start with the functions you want, such as dimming, scenes or scheduled lights. We assess the existing installation before deciding whether compatible switches, modules, lamps or a wider system are appropriate.
Should I use smart switches or smart bulbs?
Smart switches can suit control of compatible existing lighting, while smart bulbs provide features at individual lamps. The best choice depends on everyday wall-switch use, dimming, aesthetics and the desired system. Plan the way occupants will operate the lights, not just the app features.
Do smart switches need a neutral wire?
Some do and some product designs have different requirements. Compatibility must be checked against the exact model and existing circuit. Do not open a switch to inspect the wiring yourself; provide product details and arrange an electrician's assessment before purchasing fixed-wiring controls.

Will smart lighting still work if the internet goes down?
It depends on the system. Local switching and some automations may continue, while cloud, remote, weather-based or notification features may require internet. Ask about offline behaviour for the exact products and planned functions rather than assuming every automation is stored locally.

Can smart controls work with my existing LED lights?
Possibly, if the control, driver, light and load are compatible. An on-off smart switch is not automatically a dimmer. Provide the lighting models and the functions you want so compatibility is checked before replacing existing controls.

Can I control lighting by phone or voice?
Compatible systems can support app or voice control, sometimes through a hub and internet connection. Confirm supported platforms, user accounts and any subscriptions before equipment is selected. Everyday physical control should also be considered so occupants can use the home comfortably.

Can I automate outdoor or security lighting?
Suitable sensors, schedules and controls can be considered with weather-appropriate equipment and wiring. Describe the desired behaviour, operating times and manual override. Automation does not make an unsuitable outdoor fitting safe or remove the need for electrical assessment.
Will settings be retained after a power interruption?
Product behaviour varies. Some systems retain settings but require the hub or network to restart before particular functions resume. Confirm the manufacturer's recovery behaviour and test the agreed functions after installation; do not assume every connected device returns in the same state.

How much does a smart-home lighting upgrade cost?
The number of circuits, control types, wiring changes, hubs, network needs and configuration affect the quote. A small lighting scene differs from whole-home integration. List essential functions separately from optional features so the scope and ongoing requirements are clear.
Can smart-home automation be installed in stages?
A staged plan can be considered if the selected system supports the intended expansion. Agree on compatibility, account ownership and future requirements early. Keep product and configuration records so later additions build on the existing system rather than relying on unrelated devices.
