House rewiring & older-home upgrades in Eastern Sydney & Bayside

An established home may need electrical changes to support a renovation, address reported faults or accommodate new equipment. Apexelec assesses the existing installation before recommending wiring work. We can discuss a targeted circuit upgrade, electrical work in selected rooms or a broader rewiring project, with the scope based on the property and accessible installation.

What we can help with

  • Assessment of existing wiring and reported concerns
  • Replacement or modification of selected circuits
  • Rewiring enquiries for renovations and extensions
  • Switchboard and circuit-protection work within the agreed scope
  • Staging and access planning for occupied homes

Establish what needs to change

The age of a home alone does not define the work required. Tell us about faults, previous electrical work and the equipment you plan to add. An inspection can help identify accessible issues and explain where further investigation is needed. We discuss the findings before defining a repair or rewiring scope.

Work out access and disruption early

Roof, wall and underfloor access influence how cables can be installed. If the home will remain occupied, tell us which rooms need to stay usable and who is coordinating the work. Planned interruptions, separate stages and any surface repairs should be discussed so the quotation reflects how the project will be carried out.

What to send with your enquiry

  • Property age and known electrical-work history
  • Faults or inspection findings you already have
  • Renovation plans and proposed appliance changes
  • Photos of the board exterior and accessible equipment
  • Occupancy, access restrictions and preferred project stages

Questions about house rewiring & older-home upgrades

How do I know if my home needs rewiring?

Arrange assessment if wiring condition is uncertain, faults recur or there are damaged fittings and other warning signs. Property age alone cannot determine every circuit's condition. Testing and inspection help distinguish targeted repairs, partial rewiring and a broader replacement scope.

Guidance: NSW electrical safety guidance

Does an older house always need a complete rewire?

No. The decision should follow assessment of the installation and the work you plan to undertake. Some circuits may be suitable to retain while others need replacement. The quote should explain the findings and the reason for each proposed part of the work.

How much does house rewiring cost in Sydney?

The number of circuits, property size, construction, access, occupancy and required fittings influence the quote. Board and earthing work or hazardous-material arrangements can add scope. Share plans, known issues and renovation timing so the assessment addresses your actual property.

Can I remain in the house while rewiring is carried out?

This depends on the scope, safe access and the ability to keep suitable areas operational. Work can sometimes be staged, but rooms or circuits may be unavailable. Discuss occupants, essential equipment and alternative arrangements before agreeing on the programme.

How long does a house rewire take?

It varies with the circuit count, access, finishing requirements and whether the property is occupied. A limited circuit replacement differs from rewiring a whole home. We discuss a programme after assessment, including isolation, testing and coordination with other trades.

Will rewiring damage walls or ceilings?

Existing cavities and accessible roof or floor spaces may reduce disturbance, but they do not guarantee all cables can be concealed without openings. Discuss cable routes, protected finishes and responsibility for patching and painting before work starts. Photos and renovation plans help identify the constraints.

Does rewiring include a switchboard upgrade?

Only if included in the agreed scope or needed for the work to be suitable and compliant. The board, protection, earthing and supply need assessment alongside the circuits. Ask the quote to identify these items separately rather than assuming they are automatically included.

Should I rewire before renovating or adding insulation?

Electrical planning should happen before finishes or access changes make cable work harder. Tell us the building programme, proposed insulation and new appliances. An early assessment can identify which work should be completed while areas are accessible, without assuming every renovation needs a full rewire.

What if old boards or building materials may contain asbestos?

Do not disturb suspected material to inspect the wiring. Some older electrical backing boards contain asbestos, and other building materials may also need assessment. Identification, safe access and any removal arrangements should be resolved before intrusive electrical work begins.

Guidance: NSW asbestos switchboard guidance

What records should I keep after rewiring?

Retain the agreed scope, invoice, test-related documentation and customer copy of the required CCEW. Ask for the circuit identification and any remaining recommendations. These records help explain what was replaced and what was retained for future maintenance or property enquiries.

Guidance: NSW electrical compliance certificates
